1 CZK for wildlife
From 1 January 2016 onwards, just paying a visit to Ostrava Zoo lends support to this cause! Each visit directly contributes 1 CZK towards saving endangered species of animals and plants in the wild!
As the name of the scheme suggests, 1 Czech koruna (CZK) from every admission charge paid to Ostrava Zoo shall be deposited in a special account, exclusively to support projects to save and protect endangered species of animals and plants in the wild. Taking into consideration average annual attendance, it is expected that this financial support will amount to around 500 thousand CZK per annum. Through this scheme, we are able to help conservation projects based in the locations of such threatened species (in situ), whether it concerns this country or others in the world. The purpose is primarily to support projects that conserve or repatriate species held by Ostrava Zoo, as well as projects in areas and countries that the Zoo has been cooperating with over the long-term. Nevertheless, the door is not closed to other conservation projects. Going forward, everything will unfold depending on the future priorities of international conservation, in addition to what the actual situation is in different regions and countries.
Examples of the conservation schemes that Ostrava Zoo currently supports:
Kukang Project - protecting the slow loris (Sumatra, Indonesia)
Derbianus Conservation - saving the critically endangered Derby eland (Senegal)
Sahamalaza Project - saving the critically endangered Sclater’s lemur and other species (Madagascar)
Coffee and Primate Conservation - preserving the endangered silvery gibbon and other primates (Java, Indonesia)
Returning the Golden Eagle to the Czech Republic - bringing the previously extinct golden eagle back to this country
In conclusion, everyone can help with the survival of animals categorised under the framework of international conservation breeding programmes in captivity (i.e. zoos), as well as animals and plants in the wild, simply by visiting Ostrava Zoo.
Thank you for each and every visit!
