Green-Books.org
Green-Books.org is a Czech non-profit organization whose goal is to increase and promote the ecological literacy of children in Indonesia, i.e. to increase their awareness of the importance and threats to nature and ways to protect it. Throughout Indonesia, it establishes environmental education centers in which, in cooperation with local educators, it helps educate local children and establishes libraries to which it supplies books written in Indonesian about nature, animals, and the environment. In these eco centres, of which more than 80 have been established across the entire Indonesian archipelago since 2013, children learn about the importance of healthy ecosystems, environmental problems, and a sustainable way of life.
The organization Green-Books.org z.s. was founded in 2014 in Prague as a non-profit organization focused on initiating ecological libraries and supplying environmental books to schools and communities throughout Indonesia. In 2017, the Green-Books.org team started developing an educational program for informal learning full of fun games and activities. In 2019, Yayasan Green Books Indonesia was established on the Indonesian island of Bali to work with other entities and government agencies to train local educators through online resources and offline seminars.
Threats to Indonesian nature
In many areas of the world, quality education usually reaches only a small part of the population, while ecological education tends to be a particularly neglected area of education. However, low awareness of nature and animals and their contribution to the ecosystem increases their threat and makes their protection more difficult. In biologically very rich Indonesia, the situation is alarming. Indonesia's unique natural environment conflicts with the global demand for resources and a domestic economy fueled by a growing population where 85 million children lack environmental education. Issues that threaten Indonesia's nature and environment include high rates of deforestation, pollution of food chains, devastation of marine ecosystems, overexploitation of endangered species, and more.
Green-Books.org activities
The organization innovatively solves the ecological crisis by combining 3 pillars: ecological education of children, training of local educators, and promotion of ecological products. After the successful introduction of ecologically oriented curricula and the provision of feedback, schools are offered books and other ecological motivational rewards. To inspire children to live a sustainable lifestyle, Green-Books.org develops environmental and eco-oriented games and supports activities such as composting, gardening, tree planting, nature trips to observe wild birds, beach cleanups, healthy cooking, various experiments, etc. In this way, children learn about important ecological topics, such as plastic pollution, climate change, loss of biodiversity, healthy nutrition, and others, playfully and entertainingly.
In 2019, the Zero Waste School Program was launched as a pilot program to reach more environmentally-minded educators, who are the most important elements to ensure a greater and longer-term impact in the field of education about sustainable lifestyles.
