Powiększyło się stado lemurów czerwonobrzuchych!
Zoo Ostrava zamieszkuje dziewięć gatunków madagaskarskich lemurów, które są bezpośrednio zagrożone wyginięciem, a ogrody zoologiczne mogą być ich jedyną szansą na przetrwanie. Niektóre gatunki są szczególnie trudne w hodowli, tym bardziej cieszymy się z każdego urodzonego osobnika. Najnowszy przychówek w Zoo Ostrava to młody lemur czerwonobrzuchy.
Zoo Ostrava hoduje lemury czerwonobrzuche od 2004 r., kiedy z kolońskiego ogrodu zoologicznego przywieziono dwóch samców. Nadzór nad hodowlą w ogrodach zoologicznych sprawuje koordynator, który w przypadku rzadszych gatunków lemurów najpierw przydziela samców (w naszym przypadku braci), a dopiero później (jeżeli hodowla przebiega prawidłowo) decyduje o przyznaniu pary hodowlanej. To w przypadku Zoo Ostrava nastąpiło w 2006 r., kiedy z Zoo Mulhouse przybyła samica, a z Zoo Obterre samiec. Po przyjeździe okazało się, że samica jest w ciąży, a w kwietniu 2006 r. urodziła pierwsze młode. Z nieżyjącym już samcem (zmarł w 2012 r.) miała jeszcze pięcioro młodych.
Jej nowy wybranek trafił do Zoo Ostrava z Zoo Esklistuna. Nowa para doczekała się już trójki młodych. Rodzina składa się obecnie z pary rodzicielskiej oraz starszej córki (ur. w 2014 r., można ją łatwo rozpoznać – ma różnobarwne tęczówki) i najmłodszego osobnika, który urodził się 25 marca 2016 r. Rodzinę lemurów czerwonobrzuchych można zobaczyć na jednej z wysp wchodzącej w skład ekspozycji Wyspy na Lądzie nieopodal pawilonu Chitwan (video). Bracia, którzy do Zoo Ostrava przybyli pierwsi, latem zamieszkują wraz z samcami 3 innych gatunków lemurów inną wyspę, zaś zimą Pawilon Naczelnych. .
Jako członek Stowarzyszenia Ochrony i Badań Lemurów (AEECL, od 2005 r.) Zoo Ostrava hoduje także rzadsze gatunki lemurów.
Lemur czerwonobrzuchy (Eulemur rubriventer) występuje na terenach górskich i w lasach deszczowych na wschodnim Madagaskarze. Lemury czerwonobrzuche wykazują największą aktywność po zmierzchu, a w odróżnieniu od większości innych gatunków lemurów łączą się w monogamiczne pary. Samica po ok. 126 dni ciąży rodzi zazwyczaj 1, czasami 2 młode. Lemury porozumiewają się za pomocą sygnałów zapachowych – samce posiadają gruczoły zapachowe produkujące wydzieliny, którymi oznaczają teren. Liczebność dzikiej populacji jest szacowana na 1800 osobników. W Czerwonej Księdze lemur czerwonobrzuchy jest oceniany jako narażony na wyginięcie (Vulnerable). Głównym zagrożeniem jest dla nich wycinka lasów deszczowych. W 40 europejskich ogrodach zoologicznych obecnie przebywa 150 osobników.
