W Zoo Ostrava zakwitły różaneczniki
W ostrawskim ogrodzie zoologicznym rośnie najwięcej różaneczników w Czechach. Na krzewach właśnie pojawiają się pierwsze kwiaty.
Na terenie ostrawskiego zoo rośnie aż 6 000 sztuk tych przepięknych roślin (ok. 250 różnych odmian). Kwitnące różaneczniki (rododendrony) i azalie można podziwiać w różnych punktach Zoo. Gęste krzewy rosną nie tylko wzdłuż głównej trasy zwiedzania, ale także bezpośrednio na wybiegach różnych gatunków zwierząt m.in. pand małych lub w wolierach ptaków Tybetu i Chin. Najwięcej różaneczników można zobaczyć w Rododendron Parku, który powstał w zeszłym roku nieopodal pawilonu Chitwan.
Różaneczniki wyróżniają się nie tylko oszałamiającą liczbą kwiatów, ale także ich kolorami (kwiaty mogą być białe, żółte, fuksjowe, różowe lub ciemnofioletowe). Czas kwitnienia jest dość krótki, zwykle wynosi od 10 – 18 dni. Nazwa botaniczna rhododendron oznacza tyle co różowe drzewo. W tej rozległej grupie znajdują się odmiany mierzące nawet 25 metrów ale i takie, które rosną na innych roślinach (tzw. epifity). Do teraz zostało opisanych niemal 900 podgatunków, z czego połowa rośnie na zachodzie Chin, a prawie dwadzieścia odmian wywodzi się z Ameryki Północznej. Do Europy pierwsze rośliny dotarły pod koniec XVII wieku, a do Czech dostały się z Europy Zachodniej w 1844 r. (uniwersytecki ogród botaniczny w praskiej dzielnicy Smíchov). Na terenie ostrawskiego ogrodu zoologicznego pierwsze różaneczniki pojawiły się kilkanaście lat temu.
