Odgłosy jesieni w Zoo Ostrava
Na jesień Zoo Ostrava rozbrzmiewa intensywnym rykiem byków jeleni wapiti. Odgłosy tych największych na świecie jeleni potrafią wprawić w osłupienie!
Jelenie wapiti zamieszkują wschód Azji i zachód Ameryki Północnej. Samce wapiti osiągają wagę 450 kg i posiadają mogące ważyć do 18 kg potężne poroże. W odróżnieniu od jeleni szlachetnych samce wapiti wydają w czasie rykowiska (a raczej gwizdowiska) bardzo intensywne wręcz piskliwe odgłosy (obejrzyj nagranie). W ostrawskim ogrodzie zoologicznym można zobaczyć przedstawicieli pochodzącego z Azji podgatunku wapiti syberyjski (Cervus canadensis sibiricus). W swoim środowisku naturalnym to dość liczny gatunek, natomiast jest rzadko spotykany w ogrodach zoologicznych. Wapiti syberyjskie obecnie przebywają w zaledwie kilku europejskich placówkach. W ostrawskim ogrodzie żyją już od 1964 r. - najdłużej z wszystkich jeleniowatych. Od 2012 r. Zoo Ostrava prowadzi Europejską Księgę Rodowodową dla wapiti syberyjskich.
Ostrawskie stado jeleni wapiti aktualnie liczy dziwięcioro osobników. Oprócz ryczącego samca na wybiegu można zobaczyć także cztery łanie oraz trójkę tegorocznych młodych (dwóch samców i jedną samiczkę) i urodzoną w zeszłym roku młodą samiczkę.
